The egg is nature’s perfect package. It appears as a stone, yet its contents are fragile. In pre-Christian times, it was used with markings and designs to give various meanings and aspects of life -- fertility, death, birth, love, growth. As Christianity became prevalent in the countries of Ukraine, Poland, Russia, and others surrounding them, more meanings were added to the resurrection of Christ for all people. Traditionally, women “wrote” Pysanky eggs during Lent, accompanied by prayer and meditation. The finished eggs were then given to their loved ones or put at their Easter table. At our egg decorating workshop, we will combine the history and culture of “the egg” with the practical skills involved in designing or “writing” on your own egg. You will have the advantage of seeing a DVD on Pysanky plus plenty of work time with the instructor.
Workshop fee includes overnight room, six meals & snacks, and your own Pysanky craft kit. (Commuter rates available; see coupon below.) You will also need to bring a few additional basic items yourself: 1) candle holder AND any type or color of candle; 2) small container with lid to carefully transport your decorated Pysanky eggs home.
